180 minutes
The duration of  CAT 2017 will be of  180 minutes (3 hours). The test would comprise of 3 sections, each will be allotted 60 minutes. Candidates are supposed to solve each section within 60 minutes and not switch between sections while answering questions.

Last year the total time duration was 170 minutes and prior to that it was 140 minutes. In 2014, the duration of the exam was raised by 30 minutes. Moreover the test takers were also given the liberty to attempt the test in any sectional order and move between the sections. Earlier, Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation was the compulsory first section.

There will be 3 sections - Quantitative Ability (QA), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) and Verbal & Reading Comprehension (VRC).

Sections QA and VRC will have 34 questions each, while DILR will comprise of 32 questions.
Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation section will consist of questions that judge mathematical aptitude and interpretation skills of candidates. While Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning questions test the language skills and ability to comprehend.

Marking Scheme:
Each question carries 3 marks. Every correct answer will award 3 marks to the candidate. However, there is a negative marking of 1 marks for every incorrect answer. No marks will be deducted for unattempted questions.

•   DILR section can be tricky.  Aspirants need to refer to the mocks for this section and prepare well.

•   An online calculator will be available to solve questions in Quant and Data Interpretation sections. This would help in finding answers with accuracy. The time saved from manual calculation can be used to review the solved questions.

•   Switching in between solving one section is not allowed. Therefore time bound to practice with the help of mocks and past year sample papers is recommended. Time management is one of the key aspects to do well in the exam.

•   With 3 sections comprising the test now. High balanced percentile has to be scored across the three sections. A minimum of 80-85 percentile needs to be scored, else one might not get shortlisted by the top B-schools.

•   Extra 10 minutes will be crucial as those who utilize it better may turn the table in their favor.
