Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) 2016: The Eligibility, Dates & Forms

Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) happens to be the primary way of obtaining admissions in premier engineering and architecture colleges in India by children of Foreign Nationals, Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) and Non-Resident Indians (NRI). Do you know what is it? This blog post would tell you what is DASA and how to apply for it.

What is DASA:
DASA (acronym for Direct Admission of Students Abroad) is the admission process for Under-Graduate/Post-Graduate program in Engineering, Architecture & Planning courses in Indian institutes and is meant only for the NRI, PIO & Foreign Nationals. This is a scheme of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India.

It is organized every year and is coordinated by one of the participating institutes. DASA 2016 is being coordinated and organized by National Institute of Technology ,Srinagar, Hazratbal, Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir. Admission process through DASA starts through submission of online application in the 1st week of April and ends in the month of July, when the students have to report to institutes after counseling.

DASA enables you to choose UG degree programs from 42 disciplines in 40 odd institutes. There are more than 2300 seats (2282 Bachelor degree seats and 63 Dual Degree Seats in DASA 2015) each year through DASA. How many seats are there for each discipline and in which colleges?

Cost of education through DASA:
Registration fees: USD 300.
Tuition fees: USD 8000 per annum.

Selection Methodology in DASA:
DASA selection process consists of SAT Subject Tests only. The merit List for allotment of seats is based on total of three SAT Subject Tests: Mathematics Level 2, Physics and Chemistry. If there is a tie of SAT scores, the merit positions would be decided on the basis of marks obtained in SAT Subject Test Maths and then Physics. In case the tie is still not resolved, older candidates (i.e. date of birth) will be given higher merit.

Your SAT score has to be send directly through College Board to the organizing institute. Internet downloaded score cards would not be acceptable.

How to send SAT scores for DASA 2015:
MNIT, Jaipur is the coordinating institute for DASA 2016 (i.e. for the admissions in year 2016-17). Hence you have to send the SAT scores from College Board to NIT, SriNagar. You can do this by choosing the Institute code 7283 at the time of registration for SAT Subject Tests.

You can attempt SAT Subject Tests any number of times. You can send each valid score to NIT, Srinagar through College Board, USA. Only the best valid score in each subject will be considered while deciding the merit list. SAT Subject Test scores received till 1st June, 2016 only will be considered.
