National Law Institute University (NLIU) is a law school and centre for research located in Bhopal, India. Established in 1997 by the State of Madhya Pradesh, it is one of the first three law schools to have been established under the National Law School system. Since its establishment, NLIU has consistently been rated among the three best law schools in India.The University launched its first academic programme in 1998, with eminent Indian jurist Prof. V.S. Rekhi, as the Director.Recognized by the Bar Council of India, the university admits 100 undergraduates each year through the Common Law Admission Test, who complete 15 trimesters before being awarded a combined B.A., LL.B (Hons.) degree. The post-graduate course offered at the university is the LL.M. degree.

LL.B Eligibility

Students with 55% or more in the 10+2 or its equivalent are eligible for admission. In the case of SC/ST/OBC the minimum percentage for eligibility is 45%. The age limit for admission is 21 years. For reserved categories a relaxation of two years on the age limit is permitted.

LL.M Eligibility

A candidate for admission to the LL.M. course should have passed the LL.B. Degree or its equivalent from a recognised University and should have secured not less than 55% of marks in the aggregate of the maximum marks prescribed (50% in case of SC/ST & persons with disability) in accordance with the criteria set for the CLAT 2010


Each hostel has a common room, indoor games room and TV room. Both hostels have 155 single occupancy rooms with a bed, study/computer table, and two cupboards (small and large). Each wing consists of six rooms, a balcony and common bathroom. Students have access to STD and PCO facilities in each hostel. The hostels are also provided with adequate security facilities.


The University has a reference library with 12000 volumes, which contains over 9000 books covering 44 law subjects. A large number of books and journals have come from the personal library of the late Professor TVS Satyamurthy. The MP High Court will soon be making a large donation of important journals as well. The new library building will be centrally air-conditioned and will soon be functional.

IT infrastructure 

The students have access to 40 internet-enabled computers in the computer lab for both online as well as offline work. Computer courses offered are aimed at making students proficient in computer languages, internet usage and basic computer applications.
