Preventive and Social Medicine
Preventive and Social Medicine (PSM) is a division of medical science. PSM is concerned with the measures taken to prevent diseases and promote health. Preventive and social medicine is also known as community medicine or public health.
Preventive and social medicine offers medical services ranging from curative  to rehabilitative. health services. PSM has  expanded during the last few decades. Presently, it deals with the health problems of not only a single person but the entire community at large. Public Health involves statistics, psychology, sociology, law, engineering and economics as well as clinical sciences and biological sciences.

Basic Eligibility

For taking admission into this course a student should have completed his/her 2 years intermediate, Higher School Certificate or equivalent course, with science subjects such as Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The duration for this course is 3 years.

The eligibility criteria for pursuing a master’s degree are holding a bachelor's degree (MBBS) from recognized medical college.Candidates also needs to have All India Post Graduate Medical Entrance Examination score. The duration of this course is 3 years

Job Prospects

Preventive and Social Medicine is comparatively a new division of medicine. There are many career opportunities in this field.  Graduates usually enter into social work after pursuing this program. Postgraduate students after completion of their course can seek employment in public health sector.  In government sector they might earn around Rs.25,000 to Rs.35,000.
